I really loved Eleanor &
Park, and definitely went through the stages you describe when I first read about problematic aspects around Park and his family. I appreciate that others with more background knowledge or different points of view are willing to point out things I may have glossed over, even if it makes me feel defensive towards authors and books that mean a lot to me.Wendyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06296827820807569574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3422763458481605657.post-71025105806622954132017-07-13T06:04:48.579+07:002017-07-13T06:04:48.579+07:00Haha I must be a nerd too because I also find that...Haha I must be a nerd too because I also find that kind of analysis interesting! I think it's great to hear differing opinions because reading is such a subjective experience. Sometimes people point out things I never noticed. Sometimes they point out things I noticed but weren't large enough to detract from my enjoyment of the story. And sometimes I point out two billion things that no one else cares about. ^^; It's give and take.

It's also really interesting to analyze the perspectives, presuppositions and definitions informing people's perception of books. Or at least, I find it interesting, but I'm a total nerd. :) Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Cilla!Kelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00938626223222252300noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3422763458481605657.post-77573761738082826812017-05-17T18:23:13.724+07:002017-05-17T18:23:13.724+07:00I'm the same, tbh! I think representation is quite personal sometimes, or that we're used to certain (mis)representations, so that even POCs may not spot or agree on a problem. I just get to wrapped up in the story and character arcs to notice those issues. As I' reading your post I'm wondering how come I never noticed the lack of diversity in HP or what is wrong with the Lunar Chronicles!! LOL now you sent me on a qust of bad reviews for the LC to find out :) Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03178857439584119475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3422763458481605657.post-37183365841698456272017-05-16T20:26:58.290+07:002017-05-16T20:26:58.290+07:00Great post, is it awful I'd never thought of H...Great post, is it awful I'd never thought of Harry Potter as problematic? Going through the stages in your post now, haha. I think at least with J.K Rowling you can tell she does make an effort, even if she doesn't always get it right. I've been re-reading Gone with the Wind which is hugely problematic - denial isn't even an option with that one.Catherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13686117720448179589noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3422763458481605657.post-56087041006649144342017-05-14T09:54:56.388+07:002017-05-14T09:54:56.388+07:00I definitely get a little defensive when I hear ne...I definitely get a little defensive when I hear negativity about a book I love. I do think it's possible to still love a book that people find problematic, though (as long as the issues are too terrible). It's good to hear those thoughts and look at the books with fresh eyes and see that they're definitely not perfect.

Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction AddictionNicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addictionhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08637114079800138680noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3422763458481605657.post-81892029862123810522017-05-13T13:13:51.510+07:002017-05-13T13:13:51.510+07:00I don't think I have gone through the stages w...I don't think I have gone through the stages when I read commentary about my favorites. I absolutely love Harry Potter and The Lunar Chronicles (mentioned above) and even the Throne of Glass series and I know there are problems with it with regards to diversity. Yes, there are issues with these books but I still enjoy them as they are. Good literature. On the other hand, I also understand the importance of calling for diversity in literature.Zeee @ I Heart Romancehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08120545951032621199noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3422763458481605657.post-15892938368319844632017-05-11T17:49:17.388+07:002017-05-11T17:49:17.388+07:00I love this post!
