[Rewind] August 2016

It is that time in the academic year where I think of doing any writing that's unrelated to my coursework and instantly feel guilty. In fact, I'd interrupted the writing of this blog post twice to go work on an assignment. When I'm not thinking of assignments, I'm trying to not ruminate about the crazy learning curve that is my placement. "You're doing your master, you don't have a life," said one of my lecturers. I suspect she's right.

But anyway!

I did manage to have a bit of a life last month. I went to the Melbourne Writers' Festival for the first time (shocking, considering I've lived here for a while). I attended multiple sessions - Writing Family with Angela Flournoy and Tracy K Smith; YA Superstars with Rainbow Rowell and David Levithan; and Goenawan Mohamad: On Indonesia, among others - and I learned so much!

Also, I got Rainbow Rowell's and Lev Grossman's signatures and managed a quick chat. Lev thought Melbourne would be a lot like Sydney (nope), and that the food is even better than in New York (yay Melbourne!). All in all, it was an absolute blast!

New to My Shelves

I feel like I've been reading a lot lately, but in reality I've only been making my way through The Invasion of the Tearling. It's a looong audiobook, unsurprisingly, and I'm constantly torn between cringing from the brutality and being sucked in by the plotline. I'm going to be in serious need of fluffy stories after this.

Timekeeper was brought to my attention via Twitter, and I was intrigued enough by the premise to download it from Edelweiss. I've been reading it here and there; so far so good! As for Cocaine Blues, I'm contemplating joining Ely's Mystery-a-thon and Miss Fisher's Mysteries is a series that's been on my to-watch/to-read list for a while.
