[The List #4] Books I'm Attempting to Read Next

The List is a feature where I hold myself accountable regarding my TBR. This (hopefully) stops me from picking up new books despite my a pile of unread books.

Or at least, that is what this feature usually is. This time it functions a little differently, since I've found myself in that dreaded reading slump. I blame Real Life. I'm trying to pull myself out of it by hyping myself up for all the books that are waiting for me!

Demelza (Poldark #2) by Winston Graham

The Story: Demelza Carne, an impoverished miner’s daughter Ross Poldark rescued from a fairground brawl, now happily finds herself his wife. But the events of these turbulent years test their marriage and their love. As Ross launches into a bitter struggle for the right of the mining communities, Demelza’s efforts to adapt to the ways of the gentry (and her husband) place her in increasingly odd and embarrassing situations. When tragedy strikes and sows the seeds of an enduring rivalry between Ross and the powerful George Warleggan, will Demelza manage to bridge their differences before they destroy her and her husband’s chance at happiness? (Add to Goodreads)

Why I'm Reading It: I have a love-hate relationship with the BBC adaptation of Poldark, and I'm somewhat reluctant to dive into the latest season as I don't know if I can root for Ross anymore. I love Demelza to pieces though, and so I've been listening to the audiobook version of this book. I really struggle to understand the Cornish accents at times, but otherwise it's been enjoyable.

Outrun the Moon by Stacey Lee

The Story: San Francisco, 1906: Fifteen-year-old Mercy Wong is determined to break from the poverty in Chinatown, and an education at St. Clare’s School for Girls is her best hope. Although St. Clare’s is off-limits to all but the wealthiest white girls, Mercy gains admittance through a mix of cunning and a little bribery, only to discover that getting in was the easiest part. Not to be undone by a bunch of spoiled heiresses, Mercy stands strong—until disaster strikes.

On April 18, a historic earthquake rocks San Francisco, destroying Mercy’s home and school. With martial law in effect, she is forced to wait with her classmates for their families in a temporary park encampment. Though fires might rage, and the city may be in shambles, Mercy can’t sit by while they wait for the army to bring help—she still has the “bossy” cheeks that mark her as someone who gets things done. But what can one teenage girl do to heal so many suffering in her broken city? (Add to Goodreads)

Why I Want to Read It: I loved Stacey Lee's Under a Painted Sky, and I've heard good things about this book from reliable sources!

Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

The Story: Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who's ever been chosen. That's what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he's probably right.

Half the time Simon can't even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor's avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there's a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon's face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here - it's their last year at Watford School of Magicks, and Simon's infuriating nemesis didn't even bother to show up. (Add to Goodreads)

Why I Want to Read It: I saw Rainbow Rowell talk during Melbourne Writers' Festival last year, and she was so interesting I just have to read her books. Eleanor and Park didn't completely win me over, so maybe this one will?

  1. I enjoyed listening to Carry On last year on audiobook! I hope that you enjoy it as well. :) I'm currently reading a book of twentieth-century poets, so it's a little long, but also enjoyable. :)

  3. I really enjoyed all the Poldark books (first generation) but still can't stand Ross! The new series has been good though I think, he and Demelza still have their sweet moments and there are other couples to root for :) Quite want to try some Rainbow Rowell too!

    1. I have the same issue! I like Poldark in general, but I'm so put off Ross now - almost everything he does makes me angry lol. I shall check out the new series then! :) Try Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, I really enjoyed that one!
