[The List #5] Kickstarting A Reading Roll
The List is a feature where I hold myself accountable regarding my TBR. This (hopefully) stops me from picking up new books despite my a pile of unread books.
I was on a reading roll for about a month, and then I just... stopped. It's really annoying! I think either my last book choice killed it, or I simply ran out of steam. Either way, I'm giving up on said book and hoping to kickstart it again by picking up a different books!
Here are the ones I'm reading at the moment:
The Other Half of Happiness by Ayisha Malik
The Story: Sofia Khan is just married. But no-one told her life was going to be this way. Her living situation is in dire straits, her husband Conall is distant, and his annoyingly attractive colleague is ringing all sorts of alarm bells. When her mother forces them into a belated wedding ceremony (elopement: you can run, but you can't hide), Sofia wonders if it might be a chance to bring them together. But when it forces Conall to confess his darkest secret, it might just tear them apart. (Add to Goodreads)
Why I'm Reading It: I loved the first book, Sofia Khan is Not Obliged, for the wonderful main character, and so I was delighted to know that there's more of her story! I'm listening to the audiobook and it's as fun as the first, though the story is rather serious in nature. Ayisha Malik does a great job hitting emotional points!
The Sidekicks by Will Kostakis
The Story: All Ryan, Harley and Miles had in common was Isaac. They lived different lives, had different interests and kept different secrets. But they shared the same best friend. They were sidekicks. And now that Isaac's gone, what does that make them? (Add to Goodreads)
Why I'm Reading It: I picked up The Sidekicks when I saw Will Kostakis at a Penguin event. I didn't have much success with it the first time around and put it down after a third of the way through. I picked it up again because I needed something light to read on the train, and something must've changed for me because it's been two days and I'm already 60% in!
Afterworlds by Scott Westerfield
The Story: Darcy Patel is afraid to believe all the hype. But it's really happening - her teen novel is getting published. Instead of heading to college, she's living in New York City, where she's welcomed into the dazzling world of YA publishing. That means book tours, parties with her favorite authors, and finding a place to live that won't leave her penniless. It means sleepless nights rewriting her first draft and struggling to find the perfect ending... all while dealing with the intoxicating, terrifying experience of falling in love - with another writer.
Told in alternating chapters is Darcy's novel, the thrilling story of Lizzie, who wills her way into the afterworld to survive a deadly terrorist attack. With survival comes the responsibility to guide the restless spirits that walk our world, including one ghost with whom she shares a surprising personal connection. But Lizzie's not alone in her new calling - she has counsel from a fellow spirit guide, a very desirable one, who is torn between wanting Lizzie and warning her that believing is dangerous. Why I'm Reading It: I bought Afterworlds from a book sale, and legitimately thought it was some sort of Pride and Prejudice re-telling. It's not, but it is still interesting! My only complaint is how massive the book is, which means I can't take it on my commutes.
What about you? What are you reading right now?
What was the last book you read? Was it good?
Ah, I hope you like the second Sofia Khan - I loved the first one but wasn't sure about the sequel from the synopsis and haven't tried it yet. Would be interested to hear your thoughts!
