[Conversations] I'm a Book Multi-tasker and Proud

Conversations is back! I'm excited to be participating in it again, and hopefully more regularly so this year. In case you haven't heard of this link-up, Conversation is a fortnightly discussion meme hosted by Geraldine at Corraling Books, where the aim is to get to know other bloggers and to generate conversations, as the name of the meme suggests. Hop on over to her blog to join in the link-up! For future topics, click here.

This week's topic is; Do you prefer to read one book, or multiple books at a time? Why?

I always, always, have more than one books going at one time.

For me, it's a matter of convenience of access. I like to have a book for my daily commute, and for the sake of my shoulders, it needs to be a book that's reasonably light and fits comfortably in my handbag or backpack. If I happen to be reading a 800-page book at the time, I'd pick a different book to bring with me. On top of this, I like to listen to audiobooks when I'm pottering around the house or before bed, so that's another one.

Case in point: at the moment I'm reading The Luminaries, which I only read at home because it's massive. I'm also reading Caraval as an e-ARC. I've also just recently finished listening to an audiobook of Ashling, which I've now replaced with an audiobook of Sofia Khan is Not Obliged (though I haven't started listening to it yet).

I don't divide my time equally among all the books I'm reading though. If one of them gets interesting, I'd be more focused on that one and ignore the others!

I've never confused plots while multi-tasking between books this way. This may because I usually have different genres on the go. It's hard to confuse a fantasy with a contemporary! Sometimes I do forget plots though, having gone away from one book for too long in favour of another. 😛

What about you?
What are you reading at the moment?

  1. Ahh I'm totally the opposite! I almost always stick to one book at a time, though sometimes I do have multiple books with me. It usually happens when I'm bored with the first book or I'm doing a buddy read and my buddy reads slower than me, so I have a second book to read while they catch up with me. AND YESSS reading during commute! I didn't think about it but it's true. I mostly read paperback at home and I read ebooks during my train ride... just because reading a physical book in a train from Jakarta to Bogor, during rush hour, is highly impractical hahaha :P great post Cilla!

    1. I've only done a couple of buddy readings so I didn't even think about that! Lol, ebooks are totally made for rush hour on public transports. I read ebooks too if I can't get a seat on my commutes! Thanks for stopping by, Puput! :D

  2. I am so NOT a book multitasker. For the first time right now I have two books going on, one paperback, one ebook. I hate it lol. My head is, like, bouncing around between two stories! But *sigh* there are just certain times when an ebook is better, so here I am trying to learn how to read two books at once lol.

    1. Haha multi-tasking doesn't always work for everyone, but hopefully you can do it when reading two books at once is to your advantage! :D

  3. I totally get that! You can't drag a 500+ page hardback out with you everywhere! It's just not practical. :)

    1. Absolutely not practical haha. My bag's heavy enough as it is!

  4. I used to be pretty monogamous with my reads but lately I find myself reading 2 books at a time. Most of the time I start a second book because I'm not totally loving the first one (but still want to finish it) and want to break up my reading of it so it's not dragging or I get bored with it.

Sometimes though, it's like you said, convenience. I usually read a lighter plot book on my breaks at lunch where I am often interrupted and then read something else at home. When I run errands, I usually listen to an audiobook.

    1. *highfives* Sometimes starting a second book helps with finishing the first one, though I've also found that sometimes I just never go back to the first book!
